What Does Cashback Mean?

Certain credit cards pay back a small share of your purchase totals. It is usually no more than a few per cent, so a single purchase does not yield a significant amount. Over a year, however, these amounts can add up to a meaningful sum.

Cashback is essentially a standard rewards program where using the card earns a bonus in the form of direct cash back. This encourages users to concentrate their spending on the card that offers the rebate, which benefits both the user and the card issuer.

Cashback Credit Cards for Residents of Finland

There are several money-back payment cards on the Finnish market, most of which are charge cards or credit cards.

Investing in peer-to-peer loans

Morrow Bank Credit Card

The Morrow Bank Mastercard returns 1 per cent on all purchases in brick-and-mortar stores and 2 per cent on purchases made online. You won't earn cashback on petite purchases or on ATM withdrawals. You can use the returned money to pay your credit card bill. The Morrow Bank Mastercard may be Finland's best cashback card, as it has no monthly fee yet still provides many advantages beyond cashback.

S-Bank Visa Cards

The S-Etukortti Visa cards offered to S Group co-op members provide a 0.5 per cent direct discount on purchases at S Group stores as a payment method benefit. A bonus, i.e., cashback, of 1-10% is offered on purchases made at S Group stores. The bonus percentage depends on your monthly spend and current campaigns. You can earn the bonus only at S Group locations, but you can use the returned money anywhere.

Curve Pay Cards

The paid Curve Pay Pro and Curve Pay Pro+ cards offer 1 per cent direct cashback on purchases at merchants you choose. Curve Pay Pro users can select six merchants from a predefined list, and Curve Pay Pro+ users can select 12. The cashback is paid to Curve's own Curve Cash account and can be used to pay for any card purchase, provided you have accrued enough cashback. Curve Pay Pro and Curve Pay Pro+ also offer a 1 per cent bonus on all purchases outside the euro area, with a few exceptions.

Revolut

Revolut is not just a payment card but a mobile bank for everyday use. Revolut offers five subscription tiers, with Revolut Standard being free. On every tier, you earn cashback on purchases, which Revolut calls RevPoints. On the free tier, points accrue slowly. The higher the paid tier, the faster you earn points. You can redeem rewards for points or transfer them to loyalty programs of Revolut's partners, such as airlines. Revolut Pro is an add-on for freelancers that also offers direct cashback on purchases.

Stockmann Mastercard

Stockmann Mastercard offers 0.5 per cent cashback as a payment method benefit on purchases made at Stockmann department stores. This matches the payment method benefit of S-Bank's Visa cards.

St1 Credit Cards

Despite the oil company name, the St1 Visa pays cashback on all purchases. You get 0.5 per cent on all purchases, and on fuel purchases at St1 stations, you can earn up to 2 per cent.

The St1 Mastercard benefits are not quite as strong. It does not pay a bonus, but it offers a 0.5 c/l discount on fuel at St1 stations.

Wirex Mastercard

The Wirex Mastercard pays cashback in BTX cryptocurrency on all card purchases. The rate is 0.5 per cent on the free plan, and up to 2 per cent on paid tiers. Wirex also pays interest and bonuses on deposited funds.

Credit Cards That Offer Indirect Cashback

Many credit cards return value through points or similar systems. In such cases, how you can use the reward is limited.

American Express Green / Gold / Platinum

American Express cards do not return cash but award bonus points. You can use points to redeem rewards from Amex partners or to pay Amex card bills. Cardholders earn one point per euro spent. In our estimate, the effective return is around 1 per cent, but when used smartly, the points can yield substantially higher value. Amex also offers extra points if your annual spend exceeds a certain threshold.

Bank Norwegian Visa

The Bank Norwegian Visa returns at least 0.5 per cent either as Norwegian Air CashPoints or as direct cash (cashback) on annual purchases up to 15,000 euros. You earn cashback on almost all purchases, but not on ATM withdrawals or money transfers. You earn slightly more CashPoints on Norwegian Air flight tickets. One CashPoint equals one Norwegian krone in value, and one cashback equals 1 euro. CashPoints can be used only to buy Norwegian Air flight tickets. Cashback can be used to pay your credit card bills.

Finnair Visa Credit Cards

With Finnair Visa Credit and Finnair Visa Credit Light, you can earn Finnair Avios points. With Finnair Visa Credit, you earn 1.7-2 Avios per euro spent. With the Light version, you earn 1 Avios for every 2 euros spent. You can use Avios to redeem Finnair award flights and for services from Finnair's partners.

A domestic round trip on Finnair costs 13,000 Avios. Accordingly, you need to use the Finnair Visa Credit card for 6,500 - 26,000 euros, depending on the card type, to earn enough points for an award flight. Even an award flight is not completely free, as you must pay airport taxes and a service fee of about 50 euros.

SweepBank

SweepBank does not pay cashback on purchases, but it offers 0.2 per cent interest on funds in your current account. This is more than just an everyday bank. However, the rate is so low that it hardly matters.

Nordea Gold

Nordea Gold has no proprietary cashback program, but you can link a K-Plussa membership to it.

You can then collect Plussa points in K Group stores. The payment method does not have to be Nordea Gold, as the first read of the card activates the K-Plussa benefit, after which you can pay by other means. K-Plussa is therefore not designed specifically for Nordea Gold; it is simply an existing bonus program linked to the card.

Nordea Platinum

Nordea Platinum offers a cashback program that lets you earn 0.5–0.7 per cent back on purchases made on credit. The rebate is paid as cash. The card also has other valuable features, and its price is reasonable.

You can also collect Plussa points in K Group stores. The payment method does not have to be Nordea Platinum; the first card read activates the K-Plussa benefit, after which you can pay with another card. It is possible to earn cashback and Plussa points simultaneously.
