Debit or Credit

Understanding the Terms

Payment cards fall into three groups. Prepaid cards require you to load money in advance to the card issuer. With debit cards, money typically leaves your account immediately. These two types are safe because it’s hard to overspend.

Credit cards and charge cards give you time to pay for purchases. With charge cards, you must pay the bill by the due date, and typically, there are no extra costs if you do. With a credit card, you can pay part of the balance later, which incurs relatively expensive interest. Credit and charge cards are usually referred to as credit cards.

There are also more complex card products on the market that combine the features above. Some payment cards also support cryptocurrencies.
